PET CARE
The standard for progesterone detection in dogs does not have a fixed numerical range as progesterone levels are influenced by various factors, including the dog's age, constitution, stage of the estrus cycle, and pregnancy status.

However, based on different purposes and situations, corresponding detection strategies and standards can be formulated.
I. Purposes of Progesterone Detection
- Assessing Estrus Cycle: By monitoring progesterone levels, the estrus cycle of female dogs can be evaluated to determine the optimal breeding period, thereby enhancing breeding success rates.
- Confirming Pregnancy Status: Although progesterone levels are not the sole criterion for pregnancy, they can reflect the pregnancy status of female dogs to a certain extent.
- Assisting in the Diagnosis of Reproductive System Diseases: Progesterone detection can also be used to aid in the diagnosis of reproductive system diseases such as pyometra.
II. Standards and Strategies for Progesterone Detection
Estrus Cycle Detection
- Initial Detection Time: Within an estrus cycle, progesterone detection should commence 3-4 days after the first observation of bloody discharge from the vulva.
- Detection Frequency: Detect every 24-48 hours, preferably every 24 hours.
- Changes in Progesterone Levels: The rise in progesterone levels begins after the peak of LH (Luteinizing Hormone). By tracking progesterone level changes, the optimal breeding period can be identified. Generally, ovulation occurs 2 days after the LH peak, which is also the best time for conception.
Pregnancy Status Detection
- Progesterone levels significantly increase during pregnancy, but the specific range varies among dogs.
- Generally, if progesterone levels continue to rise and remain at a certain level, it may indicate that the female dog is pregnant.
- However, it's important to note that progesterone levels are not the sole criterion for pregnancy diagnosis; other clinical manifestations and test results must also be considered for a comprehensive judgment.
Diagnosis of Reproductive System Diseases
- For female dogs suspected of having reproductive system diseases, progesterone detection can be performed to aid in diagnosis.
- For instance, progesterone levels in affected dogs may differ significantly from those in normally pregnant female dogs.
III. Precautions
- Individual Differences: Progesterone levels can vary among different dog breeds and even within the same dog during different estrus cycles.
- Professional Detection: Progesterone detection should be conducted by professional veterinarians or pet hospitals to ensure the accuracy and reliability of results.
- Comprehensive Judgment: Progesterone detection is merely an auxiliary diagnostic tool and should be combined with other clinical manifestations and test results for a comprehensive judgment.
